Travelling with your dog can be wonderful with a bit of planning. Whether it is a car trip across town or a holiday away, preparation keeps your dog safe, calm and comfortable. Here is how to do it well.
Safe car travel
An unrestrained dog is a danger to themselves and everyone in the car. Use a crash-tested harness and seatbelt, a secured crate, or a sturdy boot divider. Never leave your dog in a parked car in warm weather — temperatures rise fatally fast, even with windows cracked.
Build up to longer journeys
If your dog is not used to the car, start with short, positive trips ending somewhere fun. This prevents the car becoming associated only with the vet, and helps with travel anxiety and car sickness.
Pack the essentials
- Food, bowls and plenty of water
- Leash, harness, poop bags and a familiar bed or blanket
- Any medication and your vet’s details
- Vaccination records — often needed for boarding or crossing borders
- A favourite toy and a first-aid kit
Breaks and comfort
On long drives, stop every couple of hours for a toilet break, a drink and a short leg-stretch. Keep the car cool and well-ventilated, and never feed a big meal right before travelling.
Holidays and accommodation
Check that your accommodation is genuinely dog-friendly and understand the rules before you book. Research nearby vets at your destination, just in case, and keep your dog’s routine as normal as possible to reduce stress.
When your dog cannot come
Some trips are not suited to dogs, and that is okay. Rather than a stressful kennel, many owners prefer leaving their dog in a loving home environment. A verified Staunchify sitter can care for your dog in familiar surroundings or their own home, sending photos and updates so you can relax and enjoy your trip.
